Carrigan and Paul for CLC trustees

Daily Herald Editorial Board

Lake County voters are lucky to have a highly qualified group of five candidates to pick from for two six-year seats as College of Lake County trustees.

Lynda C. Paul brings to the board a wealth of business experience as president of an asset management firm and a former corporate accountant, a proven love of the college demonstrated through 12 years on the CLC Foundation board, and involvement with youth as a basketball coach and founder of a young men’s ministry called RAW.

As an incumbent, Philip J. Carrigan is familiar with the issues facing the college and has constructive ideas on how to handle them. He is involved with a wide variety of groups in Lake County addressing issues of diversity, homelessness and prisons, and shows a keen understanding of the need to do more to reach out to high school students, offering career options.

Chelsea D. Schopper, as a 31-year-old special education teacher who attended CLC as an undergraduate, would bring a younger voice to the board. She’s very aware of technology, student engagement and testing issues.

Jeanne T. Goshgarian is impressive in her ideas and insights about the college, its mission and the challenges facing its students. She shows great interest in and commitment to the school and would merit an endorsement in other circumstances.

Rich Voltair, a public policy teacher at National Louis University who is familiar with CLC and its students from his work, also is well qualified.

While all are qualified, for the best mix of experience and familiarity with the specific issues facing CLC, we support Paul and Carrigan.
