Discount drug card saved over $112,000 for area families

The United Way of Elgin, through a partnership with FamilyWize, offers a free prescription drug discount card to the community that saves families up to 30 percent or more on the cost of prescription drugs. To date, the card has saved families in our community over $112,670.

"We wanted to make it as easy as possible for people in our community to save on prescription drugs. Too many people have insufficient or no prescription coverage or need medications not covered by their insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or VA benefits," said Director of Community Impact Diane O'Connor, United Way of Elgin. “There are no age or income restrictions, no limit on how many times you can use it, and you don't have to wait to get a card. In fact, you can print one from our website and use it today.”

The United Way of Elgin has offered the card in the community since 2008. The FamilyWize cards are accepted at CVS Pharmacy, Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology LTD, Elgin Pharmacy, Medicine Stop of Elgin, Meijer Pharmacy, Osco Drug, Target, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart. When you present the card, you will pay the discounted cost or the pharmacy's retail cost, whichever is lower.

The FamilyWize Discount Card is a part of United Way of Elgin's focus on improving health in the area. United Way of Elgin health programs and initiatives work to improve access to quality, affordable medical, dental, and mental healthcare for all in our community.

Anyone can download the FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card at www.uwelgin.org/prescription. The card can also be printed from the image that accompanies the article for general use by the community.

Nationwide, 550 United Ways have partnered with FamilyWize, saving over $1 million every month with a goal of saving $1 billion by 2015. More than 4 million cards have been distributed and over $180 million have been saved to date. There is more information on the program's website at www.familywize.org, including a tool to look up drug prices so residents can see what they would save using the card.
