Schaumburg man dies in skydiving accident

The skydiving death of a 30-year-old Schaumburg man in downstate Dayton Sunday afternoon remains under investigation by the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration, authorities said today.

Karthik Balakrishnan was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, about a mile and a half east of the Skydive Chicago Dayton facility, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Dayton is located just northeast of Ottawa, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago.

Witnesses reported Balakrishnan’s parachute opening properly, but shortly afterward he went into several radical turns, losing control and crashing to the ground, authorities said.

An autopsy has been completed and representatives of the FAA are scheduled to meet with local investigators today, the coroner’s office reported.
