Winfield house uninhabitable after fire
A Winfield family escaped unharmed Friday morning when fire struck their two-story house in an unincorporated area near Winfield and left the building uninhabitable.
Firefighters said the blaze began just after 9 a.m. at the house on Cypress Lane. The first fire crews were on the scene in about two minutes, Winfield Chief Phil Dimenza said.
“It was a lot of heavy fire when we got there,” Dimenza said.
Fire crews from Batavia, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn, Hanover Park, Lisle, Naperville and West Chicago assisted.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Dimenza said the fire did about $75,000 damage to both floors of the house.
The family will be staying with relatives, Dimenza said.
The DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force arrived late Friday morning and began probing the cause of the fire in the afternoon. The task force can be called to investigate any fire in DuPage and its presence doesn’t mean authorities suspect foul play.
A few Winfield firefighters stayed on the scene to assist in case investigators discover any hot spots, but Dimenza said all other departments had left the scene by 2 p.m.
