4-H presents Kane County dog show

Members of the 4-H community will have a chance to show off their canine training skills Wednesday at the Kane County 4-H Dog Show at the fairgrounds in St. Charles.

Approximately 25 members or more are expected to compete, said Doris Braddock, a 4-H worker with the University of Illinois Extension.

Judging starts at 6:15 p.m., and competitors will be scored in obedience, showmanship and dog care.

The dog show gives 4-H’ers the chance to show what they’ve learned and compete with other members.

“It lets them show off what they know ... a lot of the kids have been dog training since March,” Braddock said. “It’s just like an exhibit opportunity for the children enrolled.”

Braddock said competitors are allowed to train with any outside source, and the 4-H organization does offer 30 spots in the Fox Valley Dog Trainers. If a competitor enters either the obedience or showmanship categories, the show requires at least six weeks of dog training for the children’s safety.

“There is a lot of excitement. They are competing first and foremost to get a blue, red or white ribbon,” Braddock said. “But if they get a certain amount of points, they can show their dog at the State Fair dog show.”

Braddock said the dog show is similar to an American Kennel Club show except categories are not segregated by breed type.

The Kane County Fairgrounds are at 525 S. Randall Road at Route 38. For more information on the show, call (630) 584-6166 or visit extension.illinois.edu/kane.
