Districts 48, 88 file appeal to stop detachment

Salt Creek Elementary School District 48 and DuPage High School District 88 have filed an appeal in the 18th District Circuit Court to reverse a ruling that would allow an Oak Brook neighborhood to detach from the two districts.

The Regional Board of School Trustees in DuPage County issued a decision June 3 that would de-annex the Timber Trails/Merry Lane neighborhood from districts 48 and 88, and annex it to Butler Elementary District 53 and Hinsdale High School District 86.

“District 48 strongly believes the ruling by the Regional Board of School Trustees was in error, and the results would potentially be devastating to the school district,” said Superintendent John Correll.

District 48 would lose 12 students and $450,000 annually in property tax revenue, making severe program cuts necessary, he said.

The detachment will remain on hold during the appeals process.
