Mt. Prospect spending $275K upgrading police, fire facilities

The Mount Prospect Village Board on Tuesday approved spending $194,085 to repair the parking deck ramp at the Police and Fire Headquarters Building and another $81,510 to replace the flat roof of Fire Station 13.

While the roof replacement is considered standard maintenance, the parking deck ramp repairs are the result of problems with the headquarters’ original construction, said Dave Strahl, assistant village manager.

When the parking deck ramp was originally built in 1993, it included an electric cable snow melting system. But the system failed soon after construction, requiring public works crews to apply salt and de-icing agents frequently.

“In the winter time, (the ramp) is essentially a parking deck slide,” Public Works Director Sean Dorsey said.

A new hydronic snowmelt system will be installed, along with a new access control system. Ramp lighting and overhead garage door also will be replaced.

Construction will require selective demolition of the existing ramp and access will be closed off for about two weeks, Dorsey said.

The flat roof at Fire Station 13 is also beyond patching and, according to village documents, requires total replacement of the roof membrane and insulation.

“The roof really needs it,” Strahl said. “The building has been occupied since the early 90s ... it’s time to start doing maintenance.”

In June, the village board approved spending $64,988 to remodel the men’s washroom at the Police and Fire Headquarters building, as continual use had caused significant wear. The renovation includes new showers, glass shower doors, ceramic floor and wall tile, urinals, toilets, automatic flush valves, automatic faucets and a cultured marble shower wall.
