Schmidt, husband involved in domestic dispute; no charges filed

State Sen. Suzi Schmidt and her husband were involved in a domestic dispute Monday that will not result in criminal charges, officials said Tuesday.

It is the second time in six weeks the couple have been involved in a domestic dispute. The previous report also did not result in any charges being filed.

In the latest incident, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen Scheller said Schmidt’s husband, Robert Schmidt, called the Lake County sheriff’s office Monday around 6:30 p.m. and asked that deputies respond to their Lake Villa home.

According to sources, two deputies and a shift supervisor responded and were told conflicting stories about what had occurred.

Robert Schmidt told police his wife had thrown a cellphone at him, then bit him on the cheek and scratched his face.

The sources said Suzi Schmidt told them her husband had pushed her to the floor of their home and struck her in the face.

The sources said deputies observed injuries consistent with both stories but were unable to determine who had been the aggressor.

Scheller said he reviewed the reports taken by the deputies and determined that criminal charges were not warranted because a case could not be proven in court.

Schmidt, a Republican, was the longtime chairman of the Lake County Board until 2010 when she topped 31st state Senate District incumbent Michael Bond to win a 2-year term.

Responding to press inquiries, Schmidt released the following statement Tuesday:

“My husband and are I going through the most challenging period of our 31-year marriage. It is a very difficult, personal family matter that I deeply regret has become public. We are taking the appropriate steps to try to come to a mutually acceptable resolution. Despite our differences, Bob and I truly appreciate the remarkable show of support from our friends in the community.”
