Little City expands Palatine campus thanks to Discover volunteers
With the help of nearly 500 volunteers from Discover, Little City’s Palatine campus continued improvement on its therapeutic campus, benefiting hundreds of the children and adults it serves.
On Friday, Sept. 16, Discover volunteers worked on multiple projects that benefited individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities as part of the fourth annual Discover Cares Month, in which employees across the country volunteer within their communities.
“Everyone at Little City is very grateful for the continued support of the Discover volunteers,” Little City Executive Director Shawn E. Jeffers said.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to expand our therapeutic approach throughout our campus with the help of these volunteers.”
This year, volunteers worked on multiple projects around the campus that help promote health and wellness, including building a soccer field, yard work, laying mulch, painting picnic tables and benches and painting homes in colors that are therapeutic for the children and adults.
“Last year we brought 200 volunteers to Little City and built a playground in a day. This year, Discover brought nearly 500 volunteers to Little City to help further transform the campus into a creative and rewarding environment.
“We are honored to work along side such a deserving organization,” said Discover Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer Glenn Schneider.
In addition, volunteers built discovery tables that help promote sensory integration, which will be placed throughout the campus. They also helped build a mock town, Little City Safety Town, created to teach individuals life skills, such as stopping at a stop sign and how to cross a street.
Discover donated and funded all the projects and supplies that were needed for the day.
