Advocate Condell Medical Center fighting cancer with tulips

Advocate Condell Medical Center is taking a bold and beautiful step to help plant the seed that early detection is key to surviving cancer.

On October 28, at 10 a.m., Condell along with nine other Advocate Health Care hospital and support center sites will be planting a combined total of 20,000 tulip bulbs in honor of all whose lives have been touched by cancer.

“This is a living reminder to patients that screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers early, when they are most curable,” said Advocate Condell affiliated oncology specialist Michael Cochran, M.D. “Partnering with our patients is one of the most powerful weapons we have to battle this disease.”

Area residents can join in the tribute by logging onto Advocate's Facebook page and choosing a tulip bulb to be planted at anyone of the 10 Advocate Health Care locations throughout the region, including Advocate Condell. The public is welcome to attend the special ceremony at Condell's campus, 801 South Milwaukee Avenue, on October 28, when the tulip beds will be dedicated.

“We hope this special dedication serves as a powerful, visual symbol of those who have fought a battle against cancer, those who continue to fight, and those who care for them,” said Jim Skogsbergh, president and CEO of Advocate Health Care. “As the system where more cancer patients in Illinois become cancer survivors, we want to pay tribute to all those who face this disease.”

Patients and family members also can share their own stories on Advocate's Facebook wall or watch inspiring cancer stories from others. For more information about Advocate's tulip planting ceremony, visit Advocate's Facebook page.

The media is invited to cover the event being held on the hospital's campus at 801 South Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville.
