Fox Valley Snowdrifters plan trips to Taos, Telluride

Submitted by Fox Valley Snowdrifters Ski Club

Fox Valley Snowdrifters Ski Club, which is celebrating 50 years, will hold a special open house at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 at the Old Towne Pub, 201 W. State St. in Geneva. All interested skiers are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will offered. For general information, call Chuck Salisbury at (630) 584-7680 or visit www.snowdrifters.net.

The Snowdrifters offer organized trips for cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities at world-class mountain resorts throughout North America and Europe. All destinations offer lessons for the new or infrequent skier, and every effort is made to pair up groups of similar ability. In spring, summer and fall, the group plans outings such as river rafting and canoeing, golf, baseball games, bike rides, wine-tasting parties, dinners out and backyard barbecues. The current 2011-12 Fox Valley Snowdrifters trip calendar is as follows:

타 Granite Peak in Wausau, Wis., Jan. 6-8, 2012, the club’s annual weekend “warm-up” trip. For about $300 based upon double occupancy, 40 skiers will travel by bus to enjoy two days of skiing (lift tickets included), two nights in a hotel a short distance from the slopes and dinner Saturday evening with club members. Many members use the first trip to test new equipment and shape up for the season. Weekend trips also provide a way for beginners and potential or new members to get to know the group.

타 Taos, New Mexico, Jan. 21-28, 2012. Concurrent with the Taos Winter Wine Festival, this trip will be $1,365 per person, including round-trip airfare from Chicago to Albuquerque, ground transportation to/from Taos with a short stop in Santa Fe, slope-side lodging in two-bedroom, two bath condos, five days of lift tickets, at least one group dinner and an embroidered fleece vest. Many restaurants will offer apres ski wine tastings and special wine and dinner events, an added value aspect of this excursion.

타 Winter Park, Colo., Feb. 8-13, 2012. For $890 per person, this trip offers four days at one of Colorado’s largest ski resorts. With an average annual snowfall of 29 feet, the destination includes round-trip airfare between Chicago and Denver, slope-slide lodging in two bedroom/two bath condos, four days of lift tickets and local transportation to and from the airport.

타 Telluride, Colo., March 3-10, 2012. For $1,625 per person, this outing will include round trip airfare from Chicago to Montrose, Colorado and slope-side lodging in two-bedroom/two-bath condos, five days of lift tickets and local transportation to and from the airport. The area averages over 300 inches of snow and 300 days of annual sunshine. The terrain is suitable for all skier abilities and the resort is among the least crowded in Colorado.

Snowdrifters is also planning a second Midwest weekend trip in upper Michigan, and details will be available on the club’s website, www.snowdrifters.net.

Club membership is $30 for individuals and $60 for families. Meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Mondays in October through March. In the off-ski season, April through September, the group meets only on the third Monday at the same time. The Old Towne Pub, 201 W. State St. in downtown Geneva, hosts all meetings in its upstairs room. Guests are welcome to attend a meeting and learn more about the club.
