PGA store, XSport Fitness filling Schaumburg’s biggest vacancy

Schaumburg will fill its largest vacant commercial building this year with the first Midwest location of a PGA Tour Superstore and the latest Northwest suburban location of a 24-hour XSport Fitness health club.

The PGA Tour store will open its doors in about three months in the 136,000-square-foot former Great Indoors building at Golf and Meacham roads.

Schaumburg Economic Development Coordinator Matt Frank said the golf equipment and clothing store will occupy approximately 60,000 square feet of the building, and hopes to take advantage of the spotlight expected on golf this fall when the Ryder Cup tournament takes place at Medinah Country Club.

The health club will fill its 45,000-square-foot area of the building closer to next winter, after the facility undergoes some significant renovations, Frank said.

While the high-end architecture, prime location and underground parking of the Great Indoors building made it a boon for the village when it first opened, those amenities also made the space a dauntingly expensive option for prospective tenants after the store closed three years ago.

But recent negotiations paved the way for the PGA Tour Superstore and XSport Fitness to share the space.

“We’re definitely excited about it,” Frank said.

Joe Whiteside, vice president of XSport Fitness, said the availability of underground parking should especially appeal to clients working out there during the colder months of the year.

The move to share the building with the PGA Tour Superstore marks the end of a long quest by XSport Fitness to find the right location in Schaumburg, Whiteside said.

“From our perspective, it’s a community we’ve been trying to get into,” he said. “We try to put ourselves in areas where the community amenities are — where people shop and eat.”

He said the two businesses should complement one another as they both involve sports and fitness, though the PGA Tour Superstore has a slightly higher percentage of men as clients while XSport Fitness serves slightly more women.

Representatives of the PGA Tour Superstore could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

With the occupancy of the Great Indoors building out of the way, the next largest vacancy in Schaumburg is the closed Lowe’s store at Schaumburg and Barrington roads. Though 116,000 square feet, the Lowe’s store has a more conventional big-box architecture.
