Support term limits in Congress
I understand that four Republican Senators are sponsoring a constitutional amendment to limit senators to no more than two, 6-year terms in office and representatives to no more than three, 2-year terms. These Senators are Jim DeMint, South Carolina; Tom Coburn, Oklahoma; Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Texas; and Sam Brownback, Kansas.
The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution limits Presidents to no more than two terms. Fifteen states have term limits for various officials, as do many local governments across the country.
The power of incumbency has become too great. We now have a Congress with to many permanent career politicians. As long as members have a chance to spend their lives in Washington, their interests seem to move toward spending taxpayer dollars to buy off special interests that cover over corruption in the bureaucracy, fundraising, relationship building among lobbyists and trading favors for pork.
If we really want no business as usual, we’ve got to have new leaders coming to Washington and lead instead of rearranging the deck chairs as the ship goes down.
As Sen. Tom Coburn says, the only way to ensure that we are truly a government of the people and by the people is to replace the career politicians in Washington with citizen legislators who care more about the next generation than their next election.
The need for instituting terms limits is so clearly demonstrated that there are four current honorable senate leaders who will shorten up their own careers in the process of leading by example. They are so close to what is going on that we have an opportunity we many never have again to get the Congressional mess straightened out.
Tell your Senators to let them know that you are aware of what is happening and demand that they aggressively support the four honorable Senators who are pursuing this Constitutional Amendment.
