Scholarship Fundraiser: Auxiliary of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital

One of the most rewarding services that the Auxiliary of Good Shepherd Hospital has provided is the awarding of scholarships to students who reside in the hospital service area and who will attend a college or university in Illinois to pursue an education in a health-related field. Since its inception, over one half million dollars have been awarded to students in medicine, pre-medicine, pharmacy, nursing, various laboratory, radiology and graduate programs. The Auxiliary Scholarship Committee now is receiving applications for 2012 and the budgeted funds will be distributed in June.

Last year, a successful fundraising event, Dining for Our Stars, was held to add to the budgeted monies. The event will be repeated this year on Saturday, April 28, starting with a cocktail reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the home of Fran and Pat Houlihan, followed by the dispersal to 14 homes for an 8:00 p.m. dinner. Parking for is made easy at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Ridge Road, Barrington Hills, and a short bus ride to and from the reception.

Special guest, former scholarship recipient Tim Beyer, O.D., will speak a few minutes about his experience of applying, interviewing and receiving an Auxiliary scholarship for seven years. Dr. Beyer received from the University of Illinois, Urbana, a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry degree cum laude, followed by a Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry where he graded summa cum laude. He is a founding co-partner of Precision Eye Care in Algonquin. Dr. Beyer focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease, particularly glaucoma, managing ocular allergies as well as pediatric eye exams. He is remembered by the committee as committed to his educational pursuit, sense of humor and the Chicago Cubs.
