Seth Paine Elementary School fourth- and fifth-graders will perform “Honk! Jr.” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, at the Lake Zurich High School Performing Arts Center, 300 Church St., Lake Zurich.

“Honk! Jr.” is a contemporary retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” with a score that everyone will enjoy.

This is the sixth year that Seth Paine second-grade teacher Robin Kern and parent volunteer Mary Beth Euker have directed the fourth- and fifth-graders. The musical is a teaching program that fosters character education, stage skills and teamwork.

Students auditioned for roles in September 2011. The part of Ugly will be played by fourth-grader Andrew Orals, while and the roles of Ugly’s parents, Ida and Drake, will be played by fifth-grader Haley Lightfoot and fourth-grader Mason Weider.

More than 70 students have roles, along with Seth Paine Principal Cameron Shapiro and physical education teacher Sandie Edwards.

Rehearsals began in September and all involved have put in countless hours perfecting their performances.
