Glendale Heights Resident Wins DuPage County Spelling Bee

Sophia Whittemore, an 8th grader from Glendale Heights, won the DuPage County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, Feb. 21. She beat 27 other competitors and with the win advanced to the 85th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals, to be held from May 27 – June 1 in Washington, DC.

Whittemore, who attends St. Walter School in Roselle, won the competition held at Lisle Junior High by correctly spelling neonatology. The word means the study of the development and disorders of newborn children.

This is the fifth consecutive year ComEd sponsored local spellers at the DuPage County Spelling Bee. ComEd will cover all expenses for Sophia and her family to attend the National Spelling Bee Finals.
