Sky trades draft pick for 6-4 Serbian forward
In its quest to make the WNBA playoffs for the first time in team history, the Chicago Sky has added more size to a roster already loaded with tall players.
Head coach and general manager Pokey Chatman announced Wednesday the Sky has acquired 6-foot-4 Serbian forward Sonja Petrovic from San Antonio in exchange for a 2013 second-round draft pick.
The Sky already has 6-6 center Sylvia Fowles, 6-5 center Ruth Riley and 6-6 center Carolyn Swords on its roster, along with signing 6-3 forward Felicia Chester of DePaul to a training camp contract.
Petrovic, 23, was the 26th overall draft pick in 2009. She is currently averaging 9 points and 5 rebounds per game for Sparta&K. This is her fourth year in the EuroLeague and third playing in Russia under Chatman.
“I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Sonja for the past few years and her skill set and basketball IQ can’t be denied,” said Chatman. “She can shoot the three, put it on the floor, crash the boards well for her size, and impact our transition game. I’m looking forward to having her join our team.”
Petrovic was a member of the gold-medal winning Serbian team at the 2007 FIBA European Championships.
The Sky begins its seventh WNBA season at Washington on May 19, with its home opener at Allstate Arena against the Indiana Fever on May 25.
