'Windy City Live' gives away free gas in Arlington Hts.

A helicopter flew overhead, police lights flashed and cars lined up for half a mile at Arlington Heights and Golf roads Friday morning. There was no accident, though — they were there waiting for a free tank of gas.

The giveaway was courtesy of the ABC 7 morning show, “Windy City Live” and Spark Energy, an electricity and natural gas provider. Between 9 and 10 a.m., cars could visit the Arlington Heights Mobil station and receive $50 in free gas.

“Windy City Live” has been holding gas giveaways like this on and off over the past year, Spark Energy spokeswoman Shawn Zurawski said, adding that Spark Energy was excited about the opportunity to bring the event to Arlington Heights.

Gina Varilek of Mount Prospect said she waited under 20 minutes in line for the gas, and it helped her fill up before a trip to visit relatives this weekend.

“It's terribly philanthropic for them to do this, especially on Memorial Day weekend when we're feeling the crunch,” Varilek said.
