Car kills 11-year-old boy in Round Lake Beach

Witnesses: Car had green light before accident

An 11-year-old boy died shortly after he was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing a Round Lake Beach intersection on a bicycle Wednesday night, according to authorities.

Jose Antonio Zamudio, of the 1900 block of Comanche Trail, was crossing West Rollins Road on Lotus Drive when he was struck at 6:24 p.m., said Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey.

He was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville 7:29 p.m., Yancey said.

A preliminary examination shows Zamudio died of massive trauma to the head, Yancey said, and that the boy was not wearing a helmet when riding his bike.

An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon, Yancey said.

Witnesses said the boy was headed south across the intersection when he was struck, Round Lake Beach Police Department Deputy Chief Richard Chiarello said.

Chiarello said the vehicle, which was traveling west on Rollins Road, stopped immediately after striking the boy.

The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County is assisting Round Lake Beach police in their investigation.

Witnesses told police that the vehicle had a green light on Rollins Road when it struck the boy, Chiarello said.
