Advocate Condell offers free lecture on breast cancer risks, treatments

To help raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Advocate Condell Medical Center is offering a free educational lecture on breast cancer screening, risks and treatments.

Eileen Morrison, MD, Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, will present “Breast Cancer: Know the Risks, Know the Facts” at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Advocate Condell Medical Center's Conference Center, 700 Garfield Ave. in Libertyville.

Dr. Morrison will provide clinical information on screening guidelines, risk factors and the latest treatments. Dr. Morrison will answer questions after her presentation.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer at some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36. Breast cancer death rates have been going down, likely the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment, according to ACS.

Right now there are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, according to ACS. In 2012, about 226,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed, and about 40,000 women will die from breast cancer.

Dr. Morrison's lecture is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request program 5C46. Giveaways and refreshments will be available.
