Does Rivers need a buffer from a Chicago casino?
SPRINGFIELD — As lawmakers debate whether to expand gambling in Illinois, state Rep. Marty Moylan is trying to keep any new Chicago casino from being built within 20 miles of Rivers Casino in Des Plaines.
The Des Plaines Democrat’s legislation is an effort to limit competition with the Rivers Casino, which opened last year.
“At the time, we were the 10th and final license,” Moylan said.
Moylan’s proposal is similar to one filed by his predecessor, former Republican state Rep. Rosemary Mulligan of Des Plaines.
That plan was never approved.
But years of debate over a Chicago casino has met the same fate so far. Moylan’s plan wouldn’t be needed if gambling expansion supporters continue to have trouble getting a bill approved by the legislature and Gov. Pat Quinn.
Moylan said the 20-mile limit likely would require a Chicago casino to be located on Chicago’s South Side. The Loop and entertainment areas on Chicago’s North Side all fall within 20 miles.
