Fox Lake Cardboard Boat Race slated for Sunday at Lakefront Park

The village of Fox Lake Parks and Recreation Department is set to launch the 16th Annual Cardboard Boat Race on Sunday, Aug. 18.

On-site building begins at 8 a.m., with the race beginning at noon at Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd, Fox Lake.

The highlight of this event is seeing the creativity each participant brings to the race. Each boat is unique, and the teams work hard to get their vessels in shape, whether off-site or on-site.

The races are timed and winners are chosen from those scores. The event also features awards for a best of show and fastest sinking. There are two categories, on-site and off-site, and four subcategories, children ages 10 and under, children ages 11-14, adults ages 15 and up, and business entries.

Life preservers are mandatory and participants must bring their own.

Teams that have preregistered and are building off-site may arrive later. Boat building kits are now available at the village hall, 66 Thillen Drive, Fox Lake.

D.J. Bob from Soundwave Entertainment will be on hand to provide music and fun in between the race activities. There will be vendors to stop and shop, food and a beer garden.

Admission into the park is free, but boat registration is $30, which includes a boat building kit.

This event is sponsored by the village’s parks and recreation department, with the help of the Fox Lake Street Department. This event would not be possible without the help of the Fox Waterway Agency, the Fox Lake Fire Protection District, Fox Lake Police Department, and Fox Lake Police Explorer Post 300.

The boat judges are Sherry Doyle, Kim Kiesgen, and Linda Jackson.
