The last government shutdown lasted three weeks, from Dec. 16, 1995, to Jan. 6, 1996.
Hundreds of thousands of federal employees were furloughed, although “essential” services continued.
We're entering Day 4 of the current shutdown. Again, the most adversely affected have been the government workers who have been told to stay home without pay.
It's hard to foresee an end to the impasse, because House Republicans want something President Barack Obama isn't willing to give: a reversal on the Affordable Care Act. With no election in November, the calendar doesn't provide any incentive to compromise, either.
