Superheroes swoop in for Fox Lake holiday parade
People in capes, cowls and brightly colored costumes brought their favorite crime fighters to life Saturday for Fox Lake’s 57th annual Holiday Parade.
The theme was “A Superhero Christmas,” so the appearances by Batman, Superman, Supergirl, Iron Man and many other comic book do-gooders were part of the show.
Put on by the village and the Korpan’s Landing marina, the parade down Grand Avenue featured an estimated 40 entrants.
Village officials, military veterans, police officers and scouts were among the participants.
The Fox Lake Cares community group decorated their float to resemble Batman’s Gotham City. A cardboard depiction of the Dark Night, complete with Santa hat, was displayed prominently.
“He represents humility and strength all at the same time,” group member David Gauger said. “And that’s the guiding principle for our organization.”
Not to be outdone, Superman’s shining city of Metropolis was erected on another float.
The Daily Planet newspaper building stood tall, not far from an old fashioned telephone booth Clark Kent could use to change into his blue-and-red Superman duds.
Thirteen-year-old Julia Warden was among those on the float, dressed as Supergirl.
“I kind of have an obsession with superheroes,” said Warden, the daughter of Village Clerk Niki Warden.
Fox Lake resident Dawn Kempf was among the dozens of people who enjoyed the parade near the town’s commercial district. She wasn’t about to let temperatures in the 40s keep her home.
“Santa Claus is coming,” she said.
Kempf’s 8-year-old grandson, Michael Decker, was more interested in seeing if the Green Goblin was in the parade.
He doesn’t mind that the Goblin spent most of his time in the recent Spider-Man movies as a villain.
“In the third one, he turns good,” Michael said.
Following the parade, a holiday party was held at the Lakefront Park building.
