Six-year-old Connor Johnson of Libertyville, a 2011 cancer survivor, shaved the head of his friend, Luke Steres, 4, of Gurnee, and got a hug afterward.
Austin's Saloon in Libertyville hosted the St. Baldrick's Foundation event on Saturday, with 115 volunteers having their heads shaved to raise $60,000 for childhood cancer research as 250 people packed the Fuel Room to cheer them on.
The Trinity Irish Dancers kicked off the event with 30 minutes of dancing, followed by survivor stories and head shavings. Arizona Cardinals tight end Jeff King motivated the crowd by saying the real heroes in life are cancer survivors.
DJ Chris Colton, who raised $3,200, tweeted out photographs to help bring awareness to how much money was raised and how much is needed.
Eight hair stylists, some from Salon and Spa in Libertyville, shaved heads for over an hour, according to event organizer Jennifer Christensen
St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding research to find cures for childhood cancers.
