12-year-old girl who drowned in Arlington Heights pool identified
A 12-year-old Chicago girl pulled from a pool in an Arlington Heights apartment complex Monday afternoon died Tuesday morning, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the girl as Jasanae Poole.
Poole was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, where she was taken after rescue personnel responded to reports of an unresponsive girl at the Tanglewood Apartments, 2134 S. Goebbert Road.
Although police continue to investigate, no foul play is suspected and the pool where the drowning took place meets all applicable safety standards, said Arlington Heights police Capt. Mike Hernandez.
"It's a tragic accident," he said.
Officials from the Cook County medical examiner's office said an autopsy would be performed Wednesday morning.
Officials from Tanglewood Apartments declined to comment Tuesday morning.
Hernandez said the girl was swimming at the pool with a cousin and a friend when she began to struggle in the deep end.
"Friends tried to help her, but couldn't get her out of the pool," he said.
An employee of the apartment complex saw what was happening, jumped in the water and pulled the girl out, Hernandez said. The girl was in the water for fewer than three minutes after she began struggling, he said.
Bystanders attempted to perform CPR until police, and then firefighters, arrived and took over efforts to resuscitate the girl.
The girl was not a resident of the apartment complex, but was invited to be there Monday, Hernandez said.
