Marijuana hidden in frozen avocado pulp
More than a ton of marijuana worth $10 million was found within a shipment of frozen avocado pulp that arrived to a Cook County cold storage facility, sheriff's officials said Wednesday.
The shipment arrived last week at a cold storage facility on the 8400 block of West 47th Street in Lyons with instructions for an urgent pickup, according to a news release from the Cook County sheriff's office.
Workers became suspicious and alerted police, who brought a narcotics dog to search the pallets. Officers searched 1,512 boxes of frozen avocado pulp and found flat bricks of marijuana - 2,100 pounds' worth. Some of the drugs were covered by the avocado pulp, police said.
Cook County's street crime suppression unit notified the Drug Enforcement Agency, and they were assisted by the McCook Police Department. Police continue to investigate.
