Columnist misunderstands term 'progeressive'
Burt Constable's article in the July 6 Daily Herald was thought-provoking in many ways. Actions that have changed society in accordance with his views are not always progressive.
Progress is when the actions of society are in concert with divine will. Recognizing that all human beings are created in God's image and are not "property" (outlawing slavery) is an act of progress. Attempting to redefine an institution (marriage) defined by God is not.
It merely reflects a willingness to allow individuals to engage in base human desires that prevent them from achieving personal and spiritual perfection. That's a regressive change.
Allowing doctors to kill unborn children with the unborn child's mother's permission is not only regressive, it is barbaric.
Politics is not a hobby for him. He is a syndicated columnist. His occupation gives him regular, quasi-authoritative access to the general public as a tool for promoting the causes in which he believes. To claim otherwise is disingenuous.
No political party can take credit for or be blamed for the good and evil that transpires in society. All people are capable of both good and evil.
A true progressive is willing to change their thoughts and actions when inspired by divine will. Mrs. Sawicki recognizes this truth and is the true progressive in Mr. Constable's story.
He should consider interviewing the Rev. Robert Sirico or read his book; "Defending the Free Market." He should read about Dr. Bernard Nathanson, the founder of NARAL and his conversion from abortionist to pro-life advocate.
On the contrary, he should challenge the Rev. Jesse Jackson on how he could accept abortion when he had been staunchly pro-life prior to 1984.
Finally, he should explain how a eugenicist such as Dr. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, can be hailed as a progressive champion of humanity.
