Volley for the Cure Raises over $5,500 for Breast Cancer Research

On Thursday, October 1, the Palatine High School Girls Volleyball Program hosted the Fremd Vikings during a regular season mid-suburban league volleyball match. The match was dedicated to all the men and women who have been touched by breast cancer with hopes that this devastating disease will one day be cured.

During the match, the Pirates hosted the Volley for the Cure fundraiser. Funds were raised through admission sales, a bake sale, a prize raffle, a 50/50 raffle, and t-shirt sales. A total of $5,531.54 was raised in just under four hours. These funds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Those in attendance could also place pink paper volleyballs on the "Wall of Hope" in remembrance, in support, and in hope for those who have battled cancer, and those who will until a cure is found.

According to Joyce Richardson, Assistant Girls Volleyball Coach at Palatine High School, "We are so grateful to the Palatine Community for raising awareness and funds toward a cure. The night was a huge success since we surpassed our $5,000 goal, largely because our 50/50 raffle winner donated all the prize money back to our cause. We honored Kari Janz, a former Fremd High School volleyball player who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year as well as Lauren Mielczarek, a former Palatine High School volleyball player who is currently battling the disease. Our theme, ONE TOWN, ONE FIGHT was evident and the spirit of the event was absolutely incredible." The coaches and players from the event would like to thank all of the staff members, volleyball families, and community businesses who donated baked goods and raffle prizes, along with all those who attended the event and supported the fundraiser with their ticket purchases.
