Berlin: Lisle officer justified in fatal shooting

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said a Lisle police officer won't be charged after Berlin determined the officer was justified in shooting and killing a burglary suspect who was trying to force his way into a home. Berlin made his decision after a roughly two-week review of the investigation conducted by state police into the Oct. 10 shooting of Anthony Aguilar of Lisle during an early morning confrontation with village police on the 4000 block of Yender Avenue. Brookfield woman killed in Oak Brook crash

An 86-year-old Brookfield woman was killed yesterday in Oak Brook when her disabled car was struck from behind by a truck, authorities said. Police say an initial investigation shows the woman's Ford Escort was in the right lane of eastbound 31st Street near the Tri-State Tollway when a vehicle made a last-minute lane change, leading a GMC Sierra traveling behind that car to strike the disabled vehicle. Rauner, Kirk criticize Trump's Muslim immigration proposal

Top Illinois Republicans have denounced presidential hopeful Donald Trump's recent call to block all Muslims from entering the U.S. Gov. Bruce Rauner said at Elk Grove High School he "strongly" took issue with Trump, and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk of Highland Park was similarly critical. Rauner last month said Illinois should stop allowing Syrian refugees into the state following the terrorist attacks in Paris, but he criticized Trump's idea. Full story.

Student who took bullet to Arlington Heights school won't be charged

A student who took a bullet to South Middle School in Arlington Heights will not face criminal charges. Classes were not canceled Monday and officials said the school was never in any danger. The family of the student came forward and has fully cooperated with police and school administration, according to Arlington Heights Elementary District 25 Superintendent Lori Bein. Full story.

Trial delayed for Waukegan teacher accused of assaulting student

The trial for a Mundelein woman accused of sexually assaulting a minor student has been delayed until Feb. 22. Briana Travis, 33, pleaded not guilty in November to 13 counts of criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a minor while serving as a music instructor at Webster Middle School in Waukegan. Bartlett student wins $100,000 with TV football throw

Alec Cannata, a 2013 graduate of Bartlett High School, walked away a big winner Saturday night at the Big ten Championship after he threw the most footballs into an oversized Dr Pepper-shaped can in 30 seconds. Cannata gets a $100,000 scholarship to put toward his tuition at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he is studying wildland fire science. "I was pretty nervous," he said. Cubs sign Zobrist, trade Castro

The Cubs have traded former all-star infielder Starlin Castro to the New York Yankees for right-handed pitcher Adam Warren and a player to be named later (reported to be veteran infielder Brendan Ryan). And they also signed infielder Ben Zobrist to a four-year, $56 million free-agent contract, after the Cubs and Zobrist had been linked in trade talks this past summer. Full story.
