Long won't return as playoff committee chairman

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long will not be chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee next season.

Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said Tuesday that the chair position was created with one- or two-year terms in mind.

Long will still be a member of the 12-person panel that sets the matchups for the semifinals. But he will no longer be the face and voice of the committee.

As chair, Long did a weekly spot on ESPN's playoff rankings show. A new chairman has not yet been named.

Long said in a statement he is "extremely proud" of the work the committee did over the past two years.
