Longtime Mitchell High School basketball coach Munsen dies

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - Longtime Mitchell High School basketball coach Gary Munsen has died at the age of 72.

Munsen's son, Scott Munsen, confirmed the death Tuesday to the Daily Republic (http://bit.ly/1ZYGDpa ). He said the exact cause of the death is unclear.

Gary Munsen coached basketball for 47 years, including 39 years as a varsity head coach. He won a total of 12 state titles in girls and boys basketball, and retired after the 2012 boys basketball season with a combined total of 902 wins.

Scott Munsen says his father taught him how to be a man, how to be mentally tough and how to compete.

Mitchell Activities Director Geoff Gross says Munsen's smile, laugh, and personality were like none other.
