Bengals' Joseph hired as Dolphins defensive coordinator

MIAMI (AP) - The ugly ending to the Cincinnati Bengals' season didn't dissuade new Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase from hiring Vance Joseph as his defensive coordinator.

Joseph, the Bengals' defensive backs coach the past two years, was hired Tuesday.

The Dolphins also hired Matt Burke as linebackers coach, Chris Foerster as offensive line coach, Shane Day as tight ends coach and Shawn Jefferson wide receivers coach. Eric Stokes was reassigned from assistant general manager to senior personnel executive.

The hirings are the first by Gase, a former offensive coordinator for the Bears and Broncos, who joined the Dolphins on Saturday.

Joseph has been a defensive backs coach in the NFL since 2006. He was with the 49ers for five years and the Texans for three before joining the Bengals in 2014.

Cincinnati's season ended with a playoff meltdown Saturday. Cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones and linebacker Vontaze Burfict drew personal fouls in the final moments that moved the Steelers in range for the winning field goal to win 18-16.

Before that defeat, Joseph's stock rose rapidly while in Cincinnati. Over the past two seasons, the Bengals were the only team to have more interceptions (41) than passing touchdowns allowed (36), and their opposing quarterback rating was the NFL's lowest.

Miami defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle was fired in October after 3ˆ½ seasons and replaced by Lou Anarumo. The Dolphins ranked 22nd in points allowed, gave up a franchise-record 4,000 yards passing and finished 6-10.

Like Joseph, Burke was with the Bengals in 2014-15. He has spent the past seven years as a linebackers coach in the NFL.

Foerster has 23 years' experience in the league and was the 49ers' offensive line coach in 2015. This will be his second stint in Miami; he was the Dolphins' offensive coordinator in 2004.

Day spent the past two seasons as the assistant offensive line coach with the Redskins. Jefferson was receivers coach for the Titans the past three seasons.
