Libertyville woman celebrates turning 100

Submitted by Gail Anderson

Enid Janssen turned 100 on March 5 and celebrated at Spring Meadows in Libertyville with family and friends and special guest Terry Weppler, mayor of Libertyville, who read a proclamation.

Her children presented her with 100 pink roses representing her 100 springs.

Enid was married for 67 years to Richard Janssen and they have four children, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.

Born in 1916 in Centerville, Ohio, Enid's passion for cooking and gardening began in her childhood while growing up as "a farmer's daughter." She earned a university degree in home economics from Ohio University and later became one of Illinois' first Master Gardeners at the University of Illinois Extension.

While serving as the president of the largest Homemakers Extension Association in the U.S., Enid was asked by the Independent Register in Libertyville to contribute a weekly column. The venture grew to three different columns and continued for nearly 20 years, covering the changing trends of the American family's food, kitchen and home during the 1970s and 1980s.

Upon cleaning out her mother's house, Enid's daughter, Gail, found 1,100 articles and 1,700 recipes and recently published a book titled "Enid's Favorite Recipes, A Lifetime of Recipes, Cooking and Gardening Wisdom." Visit www.EnidsFavoriteRecipes.com.

Enid worked thousands of hours as a volunteer and has been recognized by Illinois Governor James R. Thompson and was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Illinois Department of Aging.
