Retired AC Milan greats mourn Cesare Maldini at funeral

MILAN (AP) - Family members and retired AC Milan greats are mourning former Italy coach Cesare Maldini at his funeral.

Maldini's son Paolo, a former Milan captain, was joined by former players Andriy Shevchenko, Clarence Seedorf, Massimo Ambrosini and Daniele Massaro at the Sant'Ambrogio Basilica on Tuesday.

Milan president Silvio Berlusconi and former Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti were also on hand.

Maldini, who was also a Milan player and coach, died over the weekend at 84.

Luigi Di Biagio, who missed the decisive penalty in a shootout when Maldini's Italy was eliminated by eventual champion France in the quarterfinals of the 1998 World Cup, recalled how he apologized every time he encountered his former coach.

Di Biagio, now Italy's under-21 coach, says "he always embraced me with a smile."
