Georgia's signing class gets late boost with RB Herrien

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Georgia's 2016 signing class received a late boost Wednesday with the addition of New Manchester High School running back Brian Herrien.

Georgia on Wednesday said it has received certified financial aid papers from Herrien. The running back plans to enroll at the University of Georgia in June.

Herrien (6-1, 210) ran for 1,960 yards and scored 16 touchdowns last season. He emerged as a major college recruit when he boosted his grade point average and scored an 18 on the ACT.

Herrien had a signing ceremony at his school in Douglasville, Georgia, on Tuesday.

The addition of Herrien addresses a key need. New Georgia coach Kirby Smith has expressed concern about depth at running back as star Nick Chubb continues to recover from a serious knee injury. A wrist injury limited Brendan Douglas during spring practice.

Chubb was a leading Heisman Trophy candidate last season before having season-ending surgery on his left knee following an injury at Tennessee on Oct. 10. He had limited work during spring practice. It is not known if Chubb will be ready for the start of the 2016 season.

Sony Michel returns after leading Georgia with 1,161 yards rushing and eight touchdowns last season.

Herrien will join Elijah Holyfield, the son of former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, as freshmen competing behind Chubb, Michel, Douglas and Tae Crowder at running back.

By enrolling in June, Herrien will be able to participate in informal workouts held each summer without the supervision of coaches.
