Train engineer isn't legally allowed to drive motor vehicles

NEW YORK (AP) - A TV station investigation has found that a New Jersey engineer has been operating commuter trains despite losing his license to drive a car 10 years ago for repeated drunken driving.

WABC-TV in New York (http://7ny.tv/1NJoUA8) reports New Jersey Transit train engineer Thomas Broschart never got into trouble with his supervisors over his three convictions for driving while intoxicated. Broschart says his supervisors know his driver's license is revoked.

NJ Transit says federal rules don't require a motor vehicle driver's license to operate a locomotive.

U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez says it's "pretty alarming" that Broschart can transport commuters but can't legally drive to and from work. The New Jersey Democrat has asked his staff to contact the Federal Railroad Administration to determine whether a law needs to be changed.
