More praise for Naperville's top teen volunteer
Recognition has been piling on since spring for Jungin "Angie" Lee of Naperville and her volunteer efforts to raise nearly $200,000 to cure her rare neuromuscular disease.
Angie, a senior at Metea Valley High School in Aurora, first was named the top teen volunteer in Illinois at the high school level in the Prudential Spirit of Community awards. Then, in May at a convention in Washington, D.C., her status was elevated when she was named one of the top 10 teen volunteers in the nation.
Now she has some more local praise, too, as U.S. Congressman Peter Roskam and Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico honored her during a ceremony Aug. 17.
Roskam read a statement of Angie's achievements into the congressional record May 11 and presented it to her at the event a few months later.
Angie has spinal muscular atrophy, which weakens the nerves in the spinal cord and decreases muscle strength throughout the body. She founded Angie's Hope with the help of friend Kyra Scadden to host fundraisers for research to cure the disease.
