Fuller makes it nine on Chicago Bears' IR list
Cornerback Kyle Fuller has been placed on injured reserve, becoming the ninth Chicago Bear on that list already this season.
Less serious injuries caused additional personnel moves Tuesday.
Fuller had arthroscopic knee surgery Aug. 17, and he returned to practice on a limited basis over the past two weeks. He was listed as "questionable" Friday in advance of Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys but did not play.
But Fuller's knee, which bothered him enough during training camp to necessitate the scope, did not progress satisfactorily.
Fuller started 30 games in his first two seasons after the Bears drafted him in the first round (14th overall) in 2014, including all 16 last season. He exploded on the scene as a rookie.
When starting cornerback Charles Tillman suffered a season-ending torn triceps in the second game of the 2014 season, Fuller was thrown into the lineup and intercepted 2 passes in a 28-20 victory over the 49ers in San Francisco.
He led all rookies with 4 interceptions and tied for first among rookies with 3 forced fumbles.
Following his brilliant start, Fuller has had an up-and-down career, playing well enough to start but never developing into the shutdown corner the Bears hoped they had drafted.
Jacoby Glenn has started all three games this season in Fuller's spot with mixed results. Glenn, undrafted out of Central Florida in 2015, forced a fumble in Sunday night's 31-17 loss. He also had a pass breakup in the end zone and leads the team in that category.
But Glenn was beaten badly on a couple of long pass plays, including a 29-yard throw to Cole Beasley down to the Bears' 1-yard line that set up Dallas' second touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, the Bears on Tuesday signed former Detroit Lions running back Joique Bell to bolster a position hit hard by injuries.
The disappointing run game has stumbled to an average of just 70 yards per game (30th in the NFL) and is expected to be without starter Jeremy Langford for at least 3-4 weeks.
Langford suffered a sprained right ankle against the Cowboys, and backup Ka'Deem Carey didn't even make the trip because of a hamstring injury in Week 2.
That leaves rookie Jordan Howard, a fifth-round pick from Indiana, as the presumed starter, which might not be a bad thing. Howard leads all Bears running backs with a 5.6-yard average on 12 carries, including a team-best 36-yard run Sunday.
Bell, 30, rushed for 311 yards and 4 touchdowns on 90 carries (3.5-yard average) for Detroit last year with 22 receptions for 286 yards.
A year earlier, the 5-foot-11, 220-pound Bell rushed for 860 yards on 223 carries (3.9-yard average) for the Lions, who visit Soldier Field on Sunday. He has 2,235 career rushing yards on 561 attempts for a 4.0-yard average.
In some bottom-of-the-roster moves, the Bears waived linebacker Jonathan Anderson and tight end Greg Scruggs.
Seven-year veteran defensive lineman C.J. Wilson was added to bulk up a weakened front line that is expected to be without starting nose tackle Eddie Goldman (high ankle sprain) for another three weeks. Linebacker John Timu was promoted from the practice squad.
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Wilson has played in 78 games with 19 starts for the Packers (2010-13), Raiders (2014-15) and Lions (2015).
The Bears were gashed for 199 yards on the ground Sunday.
