Bad behavior unchecked will escalate

The recent election of Donald Trump is an unmitigated tragedy for the nation. Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that his essential character is that of a narcissist. He is also a bully, racist, and has utter contempt for women.

Some folks say, "Give him a chance. Let's see what he does." While it may be comforting to imagine that Trump will speak and act for the public good after the inauguration, that is magical thinking. His rhetoric may fluctuate because he has no principles beyond self-promotion. He will not listen to advisers unless they tell him what he already thinks or wants to hear, as he believes he is always right. Trump will not change his core being and will act in his self-interest, not in the public interest.

There are also calls for unity, healing, and reconciliation. While this desire is understandable, the idea is a pipe dream too. Reconciliation is predicated upon a sincere contrition, an apology for offense, and a desire to change and make amends. Trump does not believe that he has done anything wrong. Further, his bad behavior has been rewarded with election to the highest office in the nation. And bad behavior left unchecked will not only persist; it will escalate.

Given this depressing state of affairs, what can one do? Americans who are nauseated by this election have to be the change we wish to see. Reclaim and reassert civility in words and acts of kindness and care. Reject fear, hateful rhetoric, and emotionalism. Continue to engage intellectually in politics and to participate in service to others. Reach out with a listening ear to those with whom you disagree, and seek to understand. Stand firm to your principles, yet act with compassion. Be ready to vote in 2020.
