Wheaton man charged in Glen Ellyn fight
A 27-year-old Wheaton man faces numerous charges after authorities said he displayed a handgun while confronting three people and fighting with at least one of them earlier this week at a Glen Ellyn motel.
David J. Abdulkarim of the 1300 block of Tall Oaks Lane was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, battery, aggravated assault, theft, resisting a peace officer and attempted obstruction of justice, according to Glen Ellyn Assistant Police Chief William Holmer.
He was being held Friday in DuPage County jail.
Police say Abdulkarim was armed with a handgun about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday when he confronted three victims at the Budgetel Inn at 677 Roosevelt Road. They say one of the victims attempted to fight him off.
Abdulkarim ran from the scene after the fight, authorities said, taking a phone from one of the victims.
The first officers on the scene saw him running into nearby Panfish Park and then saw him throw objects into the pond before he was captured.
Police said the Naperville Police Department's underwater rescue team assisted with a search of the pond and recovered evidence.
