Week 5: Conant's Sotos nets Daily Herald MVP honor
Conant guard Jimmy Sotos has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his recent high school boys basketball performances.
Jimmy Sotos, Conant: The Bucknell-bound senior guard set the standard for excellence at York's Jack Tosh Holiday Classic. In leading Conant through a 5-0 championship effort, the tournament MVP averaged 19.8 points on 57.4 percent shooting from the field, which included 52.2 percent from 3-point range, along with 5.8 rebounds as the Cougars improved to 14-2.
Tai Bibbs, West Chicago: The senior guard averaged 33 points in DeKalb's four-day Chuck Dayton Classic. Bibbs topped 1,000 points in a 58-38 win over Hampshire and scored a personal-high 41 to beat Belvidere North 73-55 for the consolation title. Bibbs hit 14 of 29 3s, shot 59 percent overall and 76 percent at the foul line.
Matthew Johnston, Geneva: This explosive, 6-foot-3 guard scored a game-high 21 points in a 69-55 victory over South Elgin in the championship game of the 89th Annual Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic at DeKalb. The senior scored 51 points in 4 games en route to all-tournament honors to help Geneva improve to 13-0.
Ryan Kutsor, Lake Zurich: His wounded right hand, which recently needed several stitches, is OK. Proof of that came in Pekin, where the Bears won the tournament consolation championship. The junior guard shot a sizzling 61 percent (19 of 31) from 3-point range and averaged 22.5 points in four games, helping the Bears win their last three.
