Exhibit at NCC shows how fashion, music intertwine

Think about any popular music genre and along with the tunes you'll hear, you'll picture fashion styles, too. The shoulder pads and pinstripes of '40s jazz, the flowing sleeves and skirts of '60s folk, the spikes and leather of punk rock, or the T-shirts and flannel of grunge.

Collaborators Jenny Dodson, Nickole Lanham and Tami Kidd-Brown know music and fashion are intertwined, and they'll show you in their debut project, ROUSE18, an unconventional music, fashion and art installation.

ROUSE18 creates an artistic visualization of the interplay between music and fashion. Through photography and styled looks, ROUSE18 showcases the impact music has on the fashion industry. Using imagery from the styled and live shoots of musicians, the installation documents a multitude of genres and styles and encourages viewers to see the resulting relationships.

The installation opens Friday, April 13, and will continue through May 27 in North Central College's Schoenherr Gallery, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Admission is free.

Before the public opening, the exhibit will open for a private event to support the college's fine and performing arts with an evening that blends music, art, photography and fashion. The "first blush" event is 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the gallery. Guests will mingle with local musicians, featured artists, models and fashionistas.

The experience also will include a runway show, pop-up shop with a curated collection of garments inspired by the exhibit, and live music. Local musicians participating in the exhibit who may also be present include members of the Ides of March, TD Clark, and Semple.

Tickets, $50, are available at northcentralcollege.edu/performance.

ROUSE18 was the creative brainchild of fashion stylist Dodson. Throughout her life, she has sampled a variety of fashion genres, which often coincided with her music obsessions, she said.

Marriage and mothering brought her into a new realm of learning how to look her best while raising her four daughters. She started working as a stylist in 2004, when she curated workshops for new moms on how to publicly breast-feed while looking fashionable.
