Baseball: Buffalo Grove protects MSL East lead
Buffalo Grove maintained its position atop the Mid-Suburban League East Division baseball race by stopping visiting Elk Grove 11-1 in 5 innings on Monday.
Carter Gledhill paced a tough offensive attack for the Bison (13-3, 6-0) with a homer, a double and 4 RBI.
Other big bats for the Bison included Riley Rundquist (double, 3 RBI) and Zach Fricke (double).
Danny Pocklington worked 5 innings and allowed 4 hits and 4 strikeouts to pick up the victory.
Elk Grove (5-5-1, 2-1) got a pair of hits from Zach Mahoney.
Fremd 2, Schaumburg 1: Connor Giusti allowed the visiting Saxons just 2 singles in a complete-game effort as Fremd got the most out of its 4 hits in MSL West action.
Luke Seidel had 2 of those hits for the Vikings (7-6, 2-4).
Schaumburg slipped to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the West.
Palatine 3, Hoffman Estates 1: Starter Evan Daly tossed a complete game for the visiting Pirates, allowing 5 walks and 3 hits to go with 8 strikeouts in MSL West play.
Matthew Helms finished 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI for Palatine (12-8, 4-2).
Dylan Bloom doubled and drove in the run for Hoffman Estates (4-7, 0-4).
Hersey 9, Wheeling 3: Cristian Rodriguez and Daniel Clawson homered, and AJ Ceffalio, Hunter Luke and Cade O'Neal had doubles to power a potent Hersey offense at Wheeling the MSL East.
Ceffalio, O'Neal and Rodriguez finished with 2 hits apiece in the top three spots of the order for Hersey (7-10-1, 4-2), and Luke Picchiotti allowed just 1 hit while striking out 12 in 6 innings to get the victory.
Prospect 11, Rolling Meadows 10: The host Knights led 5-0 after the second inning, lost the lead briefly in the middle innings and took it back for good with a 4-run sixth against a resilient Mustangs team.
Ryan Howe tripled and homered for Prospect (8-6, 1-3), finishing 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Nick Ergastolo doubled and drove in 4 runs, and Richie Baczek, John Czeslawski and Ethan Burgh had 2 hits apiece.
Jacob Johnson-Wright homered in the leadoff spot for Rolling Meadows (4-7-2, 2-3), finished 2-for-3 with 3 walks and 3 runs scored. Nate Pardini doubled and drove in 2 runs, and Matt Lothery and Angelo Shands had a pair of hits.
Barrington 11, Conant 3: Michael Zavoli doubled twice and drove in 4 runs to help the host Broncos stay unbeaten against the MSL West.
David Mitchell finished 2-for-3 and drove in 3 runs for Barrington (11-2-2, 6-0), and Tyler Acosta doubled and scored 4 runs.
Conant (7-7-1, 3-2) got a double from Colin Broeker but was limited to 4 hits totals by three Barrington pitchers.
Highland Park 3, Maine West 0: The host Warriors (4-8) were limited to 3 singles by the Giants in a Central Suburban North setback.
Joliet Catholic 9, St. Viator 4: The host Hilltoppers came up with 2 runs in each of the first three innings on their way to an East Suburban Catholic Conference victory over the visiting Lions (10-6, 2-3).
Hunter Johnson (2-for-3) and Kevin Willhite (3-for-4) led the way offensively for St. Viator, while Joliet Catholic's Justin Conant finished 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI.
Leyden 4, Downers Grove South 3: The visiting Eagles trailed 3-2 after the second inning but reclaimed the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings in West Suburban Gold play.
Matt Ozanic finished 3-for-3 and also tossed a pair of scoreless relief innings for Leyden, and Alex Duarte drove in 2 runs. Freshman Danny Flores started and allowed 2 earned runs in 5 innings.
