Community Career Center helps guide jobseekers

The Community Career Center is a valuable resource for people who are looking for jobs. That's who I'm supporting in the DuPage Human Race.

Nine years ago, our financial planner told my husband, Bob, about a workshop he was presenting at the Community Career Center. Bob said, "That sounds like a place where Judy would like to volunteer." I had talked with Kim White, who is now the executive director, and have been volunteering there ever since. After five years, I also became a board member.

The center offers one-on-one coaching sessions to help jobseekers practice their interviewing skills; create an updated, professional resume; create or update their LinkedIn profiles; explore careers and job search strategies; and become more confident at networking events.

Plus, the center presents quality workshops throughout the week; topics range from time management and digital interviewing to managing emotional hardships and finances. Accountability and networking groups meet weekly and monthly.

About 15 years ago, Bob and I were both out of work at the same time. I wish we had known about the Community Career Center to guide us through that challenging time.

Neither of us had looked for a job in more than 10 years. Getting support from people who care and learning about networking and about customizing a resume would have been a tremendous help during our career transitions.

Corporations may participate in the center's "Ask a Recruiter" workshop, an informal session to answer jobseekers' questions. Companies may post jobs through the center's intranet for free. For small to mid-size businesses and corporate clients, the center offers customizable membership options to assist employees exiting their organizations.

Community Career Center has dedicated volunteers and staff who support jobseekers. I'm lucky to have found such a tremendous nonprofit organization to support.
