Lincolnshire library collecting unwanted candy for charity
If the trick-or-treaters in your house bagged more miniature chocolate bars and artificially fruit-flavored bits than they - or you - could possibly eat, the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire has a solution.
The library is collecting unwanted Halloween candy for the Vernon Township food pantry. The candy will be donated to families who benefit from the pantry's services.
"Provide a treat for a neighbor in need," library spokeswoman Catherine Savage said.
Loose pieces of candy will be accepted, as well as sealed bags from anyone who bought too many.
"On Nov. 1, I suspect a lot of us wake up to one of two scenarios," Savage said. "One, we anticipated more trick-or-treaters than actually came by. Or two, our kids collected their body weight in chocolate last night. Either way, it's an opportunity to officially kick off the Thanksgiving season by sharing the bounty."
A tall, specially marked donation bin is near the main checkout desk in the lobby of the library, 300 Olde Half Day Road.
The collection effort began Thursday and will run through Nov. 9.
A nonprofit group called giveNkind is assisting with the collection.
