'Yes' vote in Hampshire Fire referendum
Voters granted permission to the Hampshire Fire Protection District to levy a new tax for an emergency and rescue fund Tuesday night.
Voters cast 1,569 "yes" votes and 1,371 "no" votes in response to the binding referendum question, with all four precincts reporting in Kane County, according to unofficial tallies.
The 0.1 percent tax is expected to generate an extra $236,000 to go toward replacing aging equipment and increasing staffing levels, Deputy Chief Trevor Herrmann said.
The owner of a $200,000 home will pay an additional $67 per year in property taxes.
Similar requests for a tax hike were shot down by voters in the last two elections.
