Buffalo Grove pays tribute to outgoing village attorney - and welcomes new one
Buffalo Grove trustees rang out an old legal era - and ushered in a new one.
At Monday's village board meeting, the board paid tribute to outgoing Village Attorney William Raysa, who was feted with cake prior to the meeting and received a buffalo pin during it.
The board also welcomed new Village Attorney Patrick T. Brankin of the firm of Schain Banks Kenny Schwartz LTD.
Village President Beverly Sussman recognized Raysa for more than 40 years of service. He was appointed village attorney in 1977, serving the village with his expertise in governmental procedures, zoning and personnel issues.
He made his mark on the village in the area of annexation. As a member of the Illinois Municipal League, he took part in redrafting legislation that amended the annexation statues of the Illinois municipal code.
Among those who praised Raysa was former Village President Jeffrey Braiman, who said people don't realize the role he played in creating the modern Buffalo Grove.
"The annexations that he worked on, the litigation that came as a result and the law that (was created) as a result of that litigation is astounding. He is very much responsible for what we are today."
Village Clerk Janet Sirabian echoed those sentiments, saying, "He is respected throughout the entire state. He is honorable. He is the nicest guy you would ever want to meet. He has advised me since the day I got here. I am going to miss you, and I thank you so much for everything that you have done for me and for the village."
Brankin, who will take over Jan. 1, addressed the board, thanking village staff and Raysa for their professionalism in working with him through the transition. Village officials made the switch after receiving bids from a number of firms, including Raysa's.
