Search for missing teen in Lake Michigan near Waukegan suspended
Dangerous conditions have forced rescue crews to end the search for a teenager who went missing Friday in Lake Michigan near Waukegan, officials said Tuesday night.
Extreme cold and shifting winds caused the shorelines to be filled with pack ice, according to the Waukegan Fire Department. The pack ice prevents boats and divers from entering the water, fire officials said.
"Fire department command explored all options to safely begin sonar or dive operations and determined it was not safe to perform any sort of recovery operations until conditions change," according to a news release on Tuesday.
The teen went missing about 4:30 p.m. Friday after jumping into the lake to help someone who had slipped off a pier at Stiner Pavilion, authorities said. Firefighters responded and found one person who was able to get out of the water.
