Softball: Barrington routs Lakes in the dome
Whether it's been with her travel team or high school team, Kendall Peterson has always had success in the controlled environment of the Rosemont Sports Dome.
"Good things always happen here," said the Fillies' four-year starting third baseman.
Friday was no exception.
The Fillies pounded out 12 hits in five innings, including a 2-for-4 performance by the Northwestern-bound Peterson that included 5 RBI and a 3-run inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning.
Peterson's classmate, Barbara Covek (3-0), worked the first three innings to earn an 18-3 five-inning win over Lakes in the nonconference softball game.
"We got a good start with Barbara (5 strikeouts, 1 hit) on the mound," said Barrington coach Perry Peterson, whose team is 3-0. "She is pitching really well."
Kendall Peterson and her teammates were hitting well.
Freshman Byrnn Nevers went 3-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI while Hofstra recruit Leyden Atlas had a pair of hits along with two sharp flyouts to right.
Kendall Peterson also had a deep fly out to center field where the fence is 235 feet away.
"We hit one through nine today," she said. "It was good to see as we get ready for our conference games in a little over a week."
Senior Katherine Stagnito, who walked in her first four plate appearances, led off the game with a base on balls.
After Peterson's deep fly out, Atlas reached on one of the Eagles' 7 errors.
Senior Samantha Murphy (double) then ripped a shot to right field where Annie Ellis made a nifty shoestring grab.
However, 2 errors followed on the play and Stagnito and Atlas each crossed the plate for the quick 2-0 lead.
"We almost got out of the first inning without any runs, but then we made some mistakes and they put two runs across," said Lakes coach Bill Hamill. "We gave out a lot of gifts out there.
"I think if we have our heads right and we had all our players (missing his middle infielders and an outfielder), we could have given them a good game.
"But you've got to tip your cap to them. They've got a good team. They can hit. Perry does a good job of keeping them fundamentally sound, knowing what they're doing and where they need to be at every step of the game."
Camryn Jones went 2-for-3 for Lakes (1-1) while Grace Dunsworth (1-for-2), Grace Goodrich (1-for-2) and Haley Ovaska (1-for-3) each had a hit.
"I liked the freshman in the leadoff spot for us," said Hamill about Dunsworth, who also lined out sharply to Peterson at third base. "We put her in a tough spot and she battled for us there. Haley (Ovaska) made a heck of a snag on ball down the line at third base even though we didn't get the out on the play.
"Our second pitcher (Annie Willis) came in from right field in a tough situation with the bases loaded (and two outs in the top of the second inning). She started firing away and did a nice job."
Perry Peterson felt his offense did a nice job, registering a season-high 18 runs.
"We came to play and we played hard," he said. "We just need to keep competing in the batters box. One to nine everyone hit the ball. That's the most important thing. It's a team concept."
